Ivory Coast President Gbagbo Captured!!

US Senator John Kerry said Monday that Ivory Coast strongman Laurent Gbagbo's capture gives his strife-torn country a chance at "a new beginning."

"This is an important step forward, but there will be challenges ahead and I urge President (Alassane) Ouattara to support a peaceful dialogue that will ensure the long-term stability and prosperity of Cote d'Ivoire," Kerry said.

Ouattara's forces, backed by French and UN troops, captured his besieged rival Gbagbo in Abidjan on Monday at the climax of a deadly five-month crisis.

"The detention of Laurent Gbagbo marks a new beginning for the Ivoirian people who have suffered gravely," said Kerry, a former presidential candidate who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

"All citizens of Cote d'Ivoire must now come together to tackle the hard work of rebuilding their nation," said Kerry.

Gbagbo, who has held power since 2000 and stubbornly refused to admit defeat in November's presidential election, was detained and taken to his rival's temporary hotel headquarters, with his wife Simone and son Michel.
